Marc Jacobs has checked into rehab for alcohol abuse. He's been sober for seven years, and relapsed, and so checked in again. Best of Luck!

On another note, he's making a third, even cheaper collection (Marc3 I think is what they're calling it right now). The prices are very friendly, but if this is the MJ equivalent of Armani Exchange (Armani's third cheap line), I frankly won't be too excited. Definately something to look forward to though!

Uniqlo also does collaborations with designers (better collaborations, in my opinion) but they never get anywhere near as much attention.
Philip Lim and Alice Roi's collection are released April 16 (see scans below, last 2 are Philip Lim's). I need to get my hands on that Philip Lim collection! The Lutz and Patmos and GVGV collections I also want to get a look at. Not sure when they come out though.

Intent vs Wear-ability

Reading the reviews for Miu Miu and Prada's collection made me think of this.
Miuccia is undeniably a very thoughtful person, and her collections reflect this.

Her Prada collection looked like a science experiment. The material was very carefully planned out, a mix of a lot of synthetic stuff that created a very expensive mix, but no matter how expensive and special the material is, would anyone wear it? Miuccia may be genius, and her clothes very inspired and strange and interesting and provocative, but to the practical minded person many of the pieces are ugly (there are a few that are kind of wearable, but I don't plan on getting any).

Miuccia wanted to make her Miu Miu collection look fake, because "It's a vision of what's happening in the world right now with women." I love that statement, I love the idea of it, but once again I wouldn't touch many of the pieces in the collection. The material (although 100% leather) looks fake, and rigid, and unnatural. Too unnatural. That's the intent, and it's a very artistic intent with a powerful message, but it won't be driving sales up.

The Chanel collection was typical Chanel, but there were a few interesting pieces.
I'm not a big fan for sweatshirts (especially ones without a zip), but I absolutely love this!

The Penguin is so adorable, the material of it looks really soft and comfy, and Sebastian (the model) is hot.
I think this is one of those "presents" you get for your boyfriend, knowing he will never wear it, so you keep it for yourself...

What I think of Nina Ricci

I'm so sorry I haven't posted for awhile, but my life is kind of a mess right now.
Anyways, the most anticipated show for fall 07 was probably Olivier Theysken's Nina Ricci collection.
The collection was lovely, it really was. Really light, pretty, fairy-tale romantic. The styling was perfect for the collection. If anyone else had designed the collection, I would have been trilled, but it was Olivier, and my expectations were a lot higher.
I wanted to see more of his Godly tailored pantsuits, like this:

But most of the collection was this kind of sophisticated-casual clothing, almost a bit sportwear-sy at times (and frankly, if we're talking sportswear I think Dries does a better job). Something felt missing, very incomplete, from this colelction. It also did not have the dark, romantic undertone that Rochas did. It was not as sophisticated, not as mature, not as powerful, and not as inspired. Of course, Olivier is facing a lot of pressure to make his creations more wearable, but in my opinion he compromised his aesthetic vision too much.
I don't mind sportswear, I really don't, but I don't want to see Theyskens wasting his time or talent.

Loved Christophe Decarnin Fall 07 collection for Balmain. The dresses were so cute and gorgeous, and the tanks were amazing, and I've never gone crazy over a tank top before!!!
But the pants....

They look very flattering, actually, but I'm not liking them that much. I'm sure they'll become a huge trend (some people are saying Balmain is the new Balenciaga) so we'll see.....

Oscars Best Dressed

Here are my picks:
Eva Green in Givenchy HC. Most daring thing worn by anyone that night, and I love it(although I am a bit biased as I worship Tisci...)!
Helen Mirren, in Christian Lacroix. She is among the best dressers among older women.
Nicole Kidman in this stunning red Balenciaga gown. A lot of people don't like it, and I'm not too fond of that thing around her neck, but she looks gorgeous and stunning!
Penelope was supposed to wear a Dior gown (VERY disappointed she didn't, because someone definately should have worn a Dior HC gown!!!) but she still looked amazing in this Atelier Versace. This was also the dress SJP wore in Sex and the City...
And of coarse, Rachel Weisz. Something about her is so classy and regal, she makes anything look good (I usually don't like Vera Wang, but I love this dress on her!).She knows what looks good on her.

Disappointments:
Reese Witherspoon. I LOVE the dress, but Reese totally doesn't do it justice! Her hair and pose and everything made her look like a cheerleader going to prom. THe dress is great, however....
Cameron Diaz. After the Valentino disaster she wore to the Golden Globes, you'd think she'd learn to pick another designer, but she chose this equally bad, paper-looking, stiff dress.

Eliana died yesterday, at age 18, from malnutrition. Her sister, Luisel, died in August, also from malnutrition.

RIP, and my condolences to her family.
And as much as people like to shift blame away from the fashion industry for eating disorders, something needs to be done before more and more girls fall down dead.

I think the most pleasantly surprising collection I've seen so far is Noir. They're the environmentally friendly brand, I think, from London. Last season, they were kind of biker/rocker-esque, but this season they've decided to go more traditional, although the edge is still there.

The environmentalist in me is loving this as well! Only problem is I have no idea where they sell this...

I'm dying to find kids who are too thin. I've got 42 models in my agency and I'm trying to get them to lose weight. In fact, I wish they'd come down with some anorexia.I'm not kidding. I'm running into a bunch of fat-assed, lazy little bitches who don't know how to do the stairs or get their butts into the gym. Models are supposed to be thin. They're not supposed to eat. In fact, I'm not going to eat for the rest of the day because we had this conversation.

I love Janice's show (one of my guilty pleasures) but this is ridiculous. But props for being honest. There are probably many people out there who share the same thought, but are too pansy to admit it...
But thing is, Janice was 5'10'' and 132 lbs (according to the driver's license). That's much more than some girls out there today...

My Fair Lady

Marc Jacob's collection is very different from his typical stuff. It's much more mature, 40's/50's-inspired (especially those hats!) it seems. Some of the clothing and the setting remind me of My Fair Lady (play, I've never seen the movie unfortunately).
A breath of fresh air, in my opinion, and I'm definately loving it!

Looks kind of YSL-y, but God knows I LOVE YSL so I don't mind much.

So far, NY fashion week has been a snooze. Nothing has been exceptionally bad or good. So far, Yigal Azrouel's collection has been very decent, but not as good as his spring collection. 3.1 Philip Lim and Thakoon were also good.
But despite the clothes, I'm LOVING some of the shoes, especially these delicious ones worn at Carolina Herrera (Manolo, I think).

And I just caught a glimpse of Marc Jacob's show. It looks amazing and tres chic, more Parisian than American...
Definately keep an eye out for that!

This is Karl:
Chanel is commonly labeled "Parisian chic", and it can be, but after much thought I don't think Karl does Chanel justice.
I like Chanel, for the most part. However, I really think that it is stagnating under Karl. Chanel was daring for her time period. She was very modern, inspired by menswear, and revolutionized women's wear.
Karl seems to be doing the opposite.
Last weekend, I was out shopping for professional wear for this week. One of my friends who I asked suddenly brought up the idea of tweed suits. I laughed, saying only old people wear them anyone, and went on hunting for a pantsuit (Chaiken makes gorgeous pantsuits, by the way).
Then I realized that Chanel specializes in tweed suits. At Coco Chanel's time, tweed was avant grade, but today they seemed old fashioned. In fact, what Karl is doing with Chanel right now all seem to be creative approaches to "classic" (old-fashioned) styles. I concluded, that if Coco were alive today, she wouldn't touch those tweed suits. She would come up with something modern and new.
I was comparing Karl's spring 2007 collection for Chanel with his collection for his own line, Karl Lagerfeld, and I much preferred his own collection. Chanel had little black dresses and tweeds and flats, and it was too much of the same old-same old. There's no innovation or excitement. Karl's own line, on the other hand, was edgy, creative, and much more interesting.
So why is Chanel stagnating? Under Karl, it seems, it has changed from being the daring, creative (almost scandalous, considering the kind of person Coco was) to the classic, safe brand. So did Karl destroy Chanel? The clothes are still nice and popular, no doubt, but personally I would like to see something new and exciting happening at Chanel.

What is it with fashion brands closing these days? First Rochas, they Paco Rabanne, then Cloak, and now Givenchy Homme a la Ozwald. Givenchy Homme was one of the few menswears collections I paid attention to, and I thought the latest collection, for fall 08, was spectacular and very wearable...
I should've known something was up when they decided to go showroom rather than runway.

Rumor has it, Tisci's Givenchy collection (for femme) is in financial trouble as well. Explains why the latest Haute Couture collection was only 25 looks, rather than 40. I would hate to see Tisci lose his job like Olivier (when Rochas closed). Critics have been very hard on him, but I adore his work, and his latest couture collection was phenomenon, if not the best (Dior was amazing, too, but besides that Tisci beat all). I doubt they'll actually close Givenchy, but they might force Tisci to resign, or get rid of HC or something that I would hate to see.

Dresses for Prom

Prom is possibly the moment girls anticipate most in High School, and half (or more) of the fun comes from shopping.
Some things to keep in mind about prom while picking a dress...
Prom is a dance, so you have to be able to dance in the dress. If you choose to go strapless, the dress has to fit very well, and it's probably best not to choose a very heavy dress. Most people at prom (at least when I went) take off their shoes, so also make sure your dress isn't too long, unless you don't mind holding on to it while dancing.
Secondly, prom is prom. It's fine to want to make a fashion statement at prom, but it's best not to be too avant garde. Prom is the time to be extravagantly glamorous. Also, you're young, so don't pull an Olsen and dress like you're 30.
Notte by Marchesa (price range $500-$1500), in my opinion, is perfect for prom but it's quite pricey. Their simple, but flirty and fun. They also come in a variety of lengths, all of which work.

Nicole Miller (price range usually under $500) also carries dresses. Her collections and Notte are usually quite colorful:

David Meister (price range: $300-400) is another choice. A little more subdued and elegant than Notte or Nicole Miller:
Sue Wong (price $300-400) was very popular at my prom. She makes some very princessy dresses:

Laundry by Shelli Segal (price: $200-ish I think) was also popular, because of her classic-prom taffeta dresses.
For those who have $ to spend, some other names to look up are: Mandalay and Nicole Bakti (more colorful) and Carmen Marc Valvo (more subdued).

Congratulations on Reese Witherspoon's Golden Globes dress. How did it come about?
We met, and Reese fell in love with the fabric and the color. I wanted to create something especially for her. I like her complexion and her hair color; it matches the color of the dress. Reese loves simplicity—she's a really modern girl. She's a Nina Ricci girl.

Who is the Nina Ricci girl?
I'm very inspired by cool girls who mix the ladylike looks we've seen for the last couple of years with some messy touches. There's still a sense of Parisian refinement, but it's more modern, more loose, more cool. It's younger, too.

What's the difference between the Rochas girl and the Nina Ricci girl?
I never think about the difference. I only think about Ricci now. For example, I've become really attached to the L'Air du Temps bottle.

I saw you showing it off earlier. How does the bottle's design play out in the collection?
Many of the clothes have twisting lines. I'm working with fake bias; it's between a bias and a straight cut. It makes the clothes twist around the body in a new way, and it helps me work with asymmetry. I'm less into a very square silhouette and more into a very free, very moving shape.

Why the bright yellows and grays?
There's a contrast in Nina Ricci between this idea of peace and freedom and beauty and a sense of urbanism and the city. I wanted to make these grayish, boyish looks for day, and more colorful, appealing pieces for evening in Ricci yellow. It's the exact yellow that's been used for the packaging of L'Air du Temps since the beginning.

What about fur?
I like gray fox; it's really fresh. And I'm thinking about fur a lot, because it's so hot. I'm really wondering—as it gets warmer, will fur continue? There are flowers right now on the trees in Paris.

Are people in Paris as concerned about global warming as some are in the U.S.?
Everybody's really focused on it. These two years, we've seen it getting warmer. I'm personally extremely concerned about climate and ecology and what as humans we're doing to the environment. I think about it every day.

Speaking of heat, the Oscars are coming up. Is there anyone you'd like to dress?
I won't say.

How is this pre-fall line different from what you'll show in Paris in March?
I'm in the process of designing that still, so I can't say for sure.

Why did you do jeans?
I really wanted to work with denim for Ricci. I've been suffering a little bit from my focus on ladylike looks. Here, I really think denim fits, and I like to work with the details. The stitches on the back pockets and the design on the rivets are inspired by the waves in the perfume bottle. It's an opportunity to figure out what the Ricci elements will be.

What are the Ricci elements?
It's a mix of fragility with sharp cuts.

What are your goals at Nina Ricci?
For me, it's all about pleasing the girls, the cool girls. I really want this to be successful, and also to make something that moves fashion forward. There's not enough focus in life on beauty and aesthetics. It's really positive to be focused on that.

Nina Ricci's pre-fall collection by Olivier Theyskens is quite possibly the most anticipated collection for awhile. Reese Witherspoon wore a gorgeous yellow Nina Ricci dress for the Golden Globes yesterday. When I first saw Reese, I was shocked. She's a pretty person, no doubt, but yesterday she looked stunning!

This just goes to show that Olivier is magic. There is no other explanation. I'm dying to see more...
Other people I thought were best dressed: Cate Blanchett (in McQueen), Ellen Pompeo (Versace), and Hilary Swank (didn't like the flower in hair look, but her Chanel Couture dress was gorgeous), Chloe Sevigny (odd, but funky and I liked it), Naomi Watts (adorable, the blue was PERFECT for her), and of course Rachel Weisz (she makes everything look classy)
Worst: Beyonce (if she wears Elie Saab again I think i'll barf), Rinko (ridiculous Chanel dress), Jennifer Love Hewitt (don't even know what she was wearing, but it was very overboard, although not as bad as Beyonce IMO), Eva Longoria (those lashes were so ridiculously fake), Nicolette Sheridan (too white, structure too contrived and unflattering), Heidi Klum (looked like she was wearing a sheet, the thing around her neck also has to go), the commander in chief actress (sunglasses and hair were same color, both of which didn't match her dress), and the list goes on...

Paris, Britney, Lindsay etc were on the worst, Kate Winslet, Angelina Jolie, Helen Mirren were best.
I agree Britney, Paris, LiLo aren't the best dressed, but I can think of a few people who are worse... And his best list definately doesn't do justice to the truly best dressed (IMO, Cate Blanchett is the best dressed, hands down). I really wonder: out of all the people in the world, why is Mr. Blackwell the expert on celebrity fashion? Any 13-yr-old girl can come up with the same conclusions he draws.

I usually hate it when celebrities are used, but I love this LV ad with Scarlett. It's very pinup and sweet!
Maxmara, on the other hand, I find quite disappointing. They used Vlada and Lara Stone. Vlada is simply pretty, and I never can understand Lara's appeal, but this ad just seems so immature and wrong for Maxmara. I know they're going for a younger audience, but how young?
Escada is so typically Escada. Inguna looks good (although I wish she stuck with her darker hair color).

Ok, more like Boston, but the review was written by the Crimson. Boston's Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) is holding a fashion focused exhibit, with lots of delicious couture. If you're anywhere near MFA, I would definately recommend visiting. As opposed to other museum exhibits, this one is less parochial and focused less on one designer.

Yesterday I saw this thing on TV about Crystal Renn, who is probably the most famous and most loved plus-sized model there is.

She was talking about how she had to starve herself to lose a lot of weight to model and finally learned to accept herself and be a size 12 plus sized model. Although I'm all for healthy bodies, IMO having a perfectly curvy body is just as hard for some people to attain as having a super-waif figure. First of all, Crystal is gorgeous and 5'9''. If you're that tall and pretty, it's easier to pull off clothing, no matter what size you are. Second of all, not everyone is lucky enough to have a bone structure that can be curvy. I always think about those Victoria's Secret commercials and ads with Gisele and how she's always twisting her body like crazy to be curvy. That girl is up and down. She's an amazing model, but sometimes I just look at those and think she's trying too hard. Personally, I'm 5'6'', can't gain weight (I blame my years of ballet) and have no hips. If I tried to gain weight to have a more womanly, curvy figure, all that weight will probably go straight to my waist. Not everyone is built to have an ideal hour-glass figure. There's so much angst against thin people these days, and so much people saying woman should be curvy, but not everyone can do that either. YSL is one of my favorite brands, b/c they are one of the few names that can put out clothes, shoes, and bags that I like. I just learned today that they also make cigarettes...

I'm not one of those anti-smoking crusaders, I simply find it weird and kind of gross for a fashion company to make cigarettes...

What's next, Chanel condoms? At least condoms don't ruin your teeth(yes, I may be superficial but this is probably the reason I've never touched a cigarette) ....

Groupie T-Shirts!!!

This season, there have been 4 groupie T-shirts. You might have seen Gareth Pugh and Giles Deacon wear them at the end of their shows. Gareth wore one that said "Get yer freak on Giles Deacon" and in response Giles wore one that said "UHU Gareth Pugh"

Unfortunately, these two shirts are only available on Dover Street in London, which I won't be visiting anytime soon.

The good news is that there are 2 more groupie shirts, available here for 30 euro. The first one, "Do me daily Christopher Bailey' I imagine will be quite popular as Christopher Bailey is quite attractive.

My personal favorite is "Cause me paid Hedi Slimane", as I worship Mr. Slimane.
But 30 euro for a T-shirt that very few of my friends will understand isn't worth it IMO, especially around this kind of year where I already tend to spend way too much money, and I really am not that emo.

Best use of Balenciaga ever!!!

I loved Balenciaga's 2006 fall collection, i really did, but apparently every single magazine also did, and thus the collection has been everywhere!!! It really gets annoying and boring after awhile. BUT, Purple Fashion's Fall Winter 2006/2007 featured Vincent Gallo wearing Balenciaga, photographed by Terry Richardson. A very original take on Ghesquiere's work, no? Furless Europe?

The EU (European Union) proposed today (monday) a ban that would ban all imports of cat and dog fur into all member states. I'm quite ambivalent on fur; I don't like that animals are killed cruely, but I also see no difference between eating meat and wearing fur, and since I don't eat meat I personally think I should be able to wear fur. It evens out, kind of. But what will happen to the fashion industry, largely based in Europe, if there is a ban on fur? Consumers can buy from other places, but producers will be screwed over. Nothing is set yet, but think of the consequences.......

Ok, not really Oscars, but fashion awards!!!

Doo.Ri won the CFDA awards. Personally I was hoping 3.1 Philip Lim to win, but I like Doo.Ri too. I'm just very glad Devi Kroell did not win. I never understood the hype around her. But here's a really cute pic of Doo Ri receiving her award.

The Stella awards went to Bruno Pieters. Once again, not who I would've picked (Anne Valerie Hash of course) but I like Bruno.

Here Comes the Bride

Hana Soukupova was at the Victoria's Secret show. Odd fit, I thought, because she is too skinny to be a lingerie model. Yet, I was proven wrong. Hana looked great, and she looks a bit less deathly thin at the show. I don't know if it's the lighting or she actually gained weight, but she looked great. On top of that, Miss Hana is getting married tomorrow!!! She's so young, but I wish her happiness. She'd make such a lovely bride!

Kate Moss's Wedding Dress

Kate Moss has commissioned Alexander Mcqueen (!!!) to design her wedding dress. His dresses are beautiful, but I'm even more excited to see whether or not Mcqueen will also design the veil. Knowing Kate and Pete, the wedding probably will not be very traditional. Wouldn't it be amazing if Kate looked like this?

Too Thin: RIP Ana Carolina Reston

Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston died from anorexia nervosa on Wednesday. She was hospitalized for kidney malfunction since Oct 25. She was with Ford and Elite, and did some modeling for Armani. She was 1.72 meters tall (5'7.5'') and weighed 40 kg (88 lbs). That, according to my calculations, is a BMI of 13.5. She was 21. My condolences for her family and friends.....

A little Color can go a LONG way

Lydia Hearst has always been pretty, but as a blonde she wasn't anything special. However, now that she has dyed her hair red, she's absolutely STUNNING!!!

Likewise, Nicole Richie looked nice as a blonde, but she looks much more refreshing as a brunette.

Maybe I should go dye my hair...

I don't know what's gotten into me. I posted about Dimitri today, and then I started looking through Nathalie Homme's website, and noticed a few other really really gorgeous male models. Honestly, I haven't paid much attention to male models except a few, but now I'm obsessed!!! So, I'm going to share my obsession. Haha.

Lars Nilsson for Scherrer

Lars left Nina Ricci, which is now headed by Olivier Theyskens. WWD reports that Nilsson will be joining Jean-Louis Scherrer, which is currently headed by Stephane Rolland. I'm not very familiar with Scherrer, so I was looking through its Fall 06 collection, and it looked like a more-expensive, badly-done version of Anna Sui. I predict a major shift in focus. Lars Nilsson's work at Nina Ricci was so delicate and feminine, yet fun and creative at the same time, and I predict that he will absolutely reform and run with Scherrer. I'm very excited!!! On another note, here's an outfit (especially the pants) from Nina Ricci fall 06 i'm dying to get my hands on.

Nicole Kidman in Versace?!

Nicole Kidman is widely praised for her stly, but she rarely wears Versace. In fact, the only Versace that I've ever seen her wear was a coat. Yet, somehow, Vogue US decided that Ms. Kidman would look good in Versace.
Here's a very bad picture of the cover. Nicole looks.... not like herself. Here's the dress... Personally, I don't think the dress looks too bad, just a bit costumy, but Nicole Kidman is definately the wrong person to put in a dress like that!!!

Giles Deacon for New Look

First there was H&M, then there was Target, then there was Kohls (Vera Wang), then Nine West, then Gap (Roland Mouret), and now New Look is doing a collaboration with Giles Deacon, who just won designer of the year at the British Fashion Awards by the way.
I live in the US, so I'm not too familiar with New Look. I was looking through the website, and the clothes look very cheap, like Gap-ish. Giles can do much better than this, I wish H&M or something respectable would take him on.

Dutch Invasion

Could the next wave of models be Dutch? First, there is Bette Frank, who is bound to be the next big model, and now we have Iekeliene Stange and Lara Stone, who both made Style's "facebook" (best new models). If you go further back, there was Yfke Sturm and Rianne.
Is this an invasion, or simply a short lasting trend?

Sophia Kokosalaki for Nine West

I absolutely adore Sophia's designs, so when I first heard about this I was very excited. However, after seeing the pieces, I'm actually quite disappointed.

First of all, after seeing the collection, I remembered that although I love Sophia's clothes, I've never really paid much attention to her shoes.
The shoes in this collection were quite disappointing. I liked these poots (Daphne, goes for $350) but not enough to buy them.
i did love this Rossa trench ($495), but that may just be that I have a thing for trenches. Honestly, though, I can easily find a better, cheaper trench elsewhere. This is weird, out of all the collaborations out there, Nine West is among my favorites (I loved the Thakoon and Vivienne Westwood collections), but this time I'm horribly disappointed.

Helmut Lang without Helmut

There is a spring 07 Helmut Lang collection, but this does not mean Helmut is back in business. He is still busy raising chickens, and purportedly painting. Rather, Nicole and Michael Colovos, the founders of Habitual, are designing under Helmut's label. I'm not too familiar with the Colovos', but I really doubt they will be able to do Helmut justice. They "reference" Helmut Lang's aesthetic, which sounds nice, but does this actually mean anything? Probably not. What is this world coming to?

Of course, I could totally be wrong and the collection be amazing, but only time will tell.
